10-Day Wellness & Detox Retreat with Yoga in Costa Rica's Rainforest

The Essence Arenal Wellness Center sits in El Castillo, a small village near La Fortuna, on 22 hectares of forested land overlooking the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. From the moment you arrive, the setting does a lot of the work: volcano views from the yoga deck, the sound of birds in the canopy, and trails that lead to a hidden waterfall. Unlike a structured retreat with a fixed agenda, this one shapes itself around you—you pick the activities, the treatments, and even your start date, which is rare in the retreat world.

A typical day starts early: yoga from 7 to 8:15 AM, then a forest walk before breakfast. Depending on your goals you might spend the morning in a detox consult with the naturopath, or just read by the pool. Afternoons are for the spa circuit—Finnish sauna, jacuzzi, steam room—and you've got one complimentary hour each day with panoramic views. There are also optional afternoon yoga sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, which are more regenerative and restorative in pace. The rest of the time, you can book spa treatments, hike, or join one of the many nearby activities like horseback riding or kayaking on the lake.

What makes this retreat different is the combination of genuine detox support—ionic foot baths, special diets, consultations—with the flexibility of a boutique hotel. You're not locked into a strict cleanse unless you want to be. Founder Nico started the project in 2008 after losing 80 pounds and dealing with his own health issues here, and he's built the centre around that experience: naturopathic care, nutritional coaching, yoga, and an 80-acre organic farm that supplies the kitchen. Guests often come for a week and end up staying longer, and many return year after year.

The location is right for mixing a retreat with adventure. Lake Arenal is known for wind sports, and the area has natural hot springs, hanging bridges, and wildlife watching. But if you're happy to just stay on the property, the pool, trails, and spa are enough to keep you occupied. The boutique hotel rooms are comfortable—orthopedic mattresses, anti-allergic pillows, hot water, and private bathrooms—and the food is exceptionally well rated by guests.
