Kerala · 14 days · From USD 1641
This is a proper Ayurvedic detox, not a spa holiday in disguise. Panchakarma translates to 'five actions', and those five therapies—Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (enema), Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oils) and sometimes Raktamokshana—are administered over the fortnight according to what the resident Ayurvedic doctor finds in your consultation. On arrival you'll meet the doctor, who will assess your dosha (constitution) and any imbalances, then map out your daily treatments. Most days involve around 75 minutes of treatment or massage as prescribed—some guests get Shirodhara (warm oil poured over the forehead), some get Abhyanga (full-body oil massage), others get Basti or Nasya, depending on what needs to shift. You'll also be given internal medicines and herbs from the centre's pharmacy while you're on the cleanse.
The day begins early. After morning yoga and pranayama (about an hour), you move to a breakfast of warm, spiced, sattvic food—typically kitchari, rice and vegetable dishes. The food is cooked fresh by the kitchen team and adjusted to what the doctor prescribes for your cleanse. Lunches are vegetarian, mostly Ayurvedic staples: rice, dal, seasonal vegetables prepared with ghee and mild spices. Afternoons are gentler—a Hatha or Ashtanga class, then a cooking class, a talk from the doctor, or free time. Evenings wind down with detox tea, a sunset Yoga Nidra meditation on the beach or in the yoga hall, then an early dinner.
What makes this retreat different is the depth of medical attention. The doctor is on-site daily, checking in and adjusting your treatment based on how you're responding. This isn't a group program where everyone does the same thing—it's personalised, and it also means the intensity of the detox is managed carefully. The retreat can start any day of the week, because it's not run as a fixed group itinerary, and the package includes a pre- and post-trip consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor, plus all the medicines during your stay.
The setting helps too. Kerala's backwaters and coast are calm and green, and the village of Kaipamangalam is quiet, with a long stretch of beach to walk. The Veda5 property itself is built around courtyards and gardens, with wooden cottages at the front facing the sea. The restaurant serves only sattvic food—no onions, garlic or heavy spices—and the kitchen sources as much as it can from the local area. It's the kind of place where you can feel the city noise leaving your system by the second or third day.
You'll leave with a clearer head, a lighter body and a practical sense of what Ayurvedic routines can look like in regular life. Many guests also take the free half-day sightseeing trip to a temple or local market if they have energy for it, but it's fine to skip it too and just absorb the quiet.
