Indonesia · 14 days · From EUR 950
A typical day starts with 07:00 Watukaru yoga and meditation, often on the yoga shala overlooking the rice paddies. Breakfast follows around 08:30. Mid-morning is usually a cultural session — on one day that's rice farming, on another it's making coconut oil or learning to write Balinese script in a language class. Lunch is at 12:30, then the afternoon is either free or holds another activity: a Hindu offering workshop, a music lesson on the gamelan, or a village walk. The second yoga session runs at 16:30 and lasts about 90 minutes, mixing asana with chanting and seated meditation. Dinner at 18:30 is vegetarian Balinese cooking, and most evenings wind down early because the days are full.
What sets this one apart from other Bali yoga retreats is the lineage. Balinese Watukaru Yoga, as it's taught here, traces back to thirteen yogis from India who are said to have gathered on Mount Watukaru and pooled their practices into a single discipline. Meditation and chanting are treated as core, not optional extras. The classes are taught by Balitrees Retreats' local teachers — Krishna, Dewi and Adi. Adi is a ninth-generation disciple of the ashram, has practiced for thirty years, and developed his own yoga therapy system focused on immunity and holistic healing. Krishna and Dewi are long-term teachers in the same tradition.
The other difference is where you're doing it. Sesandan is not Ubud. There are no smoothie bars for miles. You're sharing a village with the people whose ceremonies you're learning about, and you'll be invited to some of them. On one afternoon the group joins a Trash Hero cleanup with residents. On another, you hike to a waterfall early in the morning for a purification ceremony. Halfway through the fortnight there's a sunrise excursion so you can watch the light come up over Mount Watukaru.
The retreat is run in partnership with the ashram, which means the money you pay stays mostly local — the teachers, the cooks and the guesthouse staff are all from the surrounding area. The schedule is fixed but flexible enough to accommodate weather and ceremony days; if a temple festival falls during your stay, that often replaces whatever was planned. Because dates are set on request rather than in fixed blocks, you can generally pick the window that works for you, subject to availability at the guesthouse.
The final two days usually close with a beach trip — yoga on the sand at a quieter stretch of the Tabanan coast — and your included two-hour massage is booked in one of the last afternoons. People tend to leave having picked up some village Balinese, a handful of offerings they can make at home, and a daily practice they can keep up without a teacher.
