14 Day Eat Pray Love Bali Yoga & Cultural Immersion Retreat

Indonesia · 14 days · From USD 970

The retreat is based in Sesandan village in the Tabanan district, right in the middle of the island, close to Mount Watukaru. This is not the Bali of beach clubs and Instagram cafes — it's a working village where you'll hear roosters in the morning and see locals going about their day as you walk to the yoga shala. The center itself, Balitrees, sits among rice paddies and coconut trees, and it's recently received a CHSE permit from the Indonesian government, putting it on the official list of recommended Covid-safe properties for the whole Tabanan district.

The yoga is Traditional Balinese Watukaru Yoga, a practice said to have been created thousands of years ago when 13 yogis from India came to meditate on the top of Mount Watukaru (also called Batukaru Mountain). They combined the best of their own styles into one practice and named it for the mountain. It's heavily focused on meditation and the flow of inner energy, with chanting and breathwork as core elements — the teachers here are clear that without meditation, yoga is just exercise. You'll practice in the Pasraman Seruling Dewata ashram, one of the oldest spiritual ashrams in the world, which still preserves all 13 original styles.

The cultural program is what makes this retreat different from a standard Bali yoga holiday. Twice a day you choose from activities like waterfall purification trips, rice farming, coconut oil making workshops, Balinese cooking classes, language classes, traditional dance performances, and even a Trash Hero village cleanup. On Mondays and Fridays, if the weather is good, classes move to the beach. Every other day you also get a free 1-hour spa treatment at their on-site spa center.

One of the two main teachers is I Krishna, a local woman who has been studying and teaching Balinese Yoga, meditation, pranayama, and chakra opening for ten years. The other is Dewi, who used to work twelve-hour days in the rice paddies as a farmer and housewife before learning English and yoga. Now she teaches both international guests and local women and children in the village. Both are described by past guests as warm, fun, and deeply committed to the students.
