21-Day Ayurvedic Wellness & Yoga Detox in the Himalayan Foothills, Nepal

Kathmandu · 21 days · From USD 1467

This retreat is run by a spiritual family from their home on the quieter side of Kathmandu, about 10 km from the airport. The programs aren't fixed — after you arrive, you'll have a consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor, and your daily therapies are built around your body type (dosha) and whatever issues you've come with. The two-week minimum means you get real, sustained treatment rather than a quick taste, and the small guest count keeps the experience personal.

Days start with an Ashtanga or Hatha yoga class led by one of the resident teachers. Ram Hari has an MA in yoga and is a Yoga Alliance-certified Ashtanga/Vinyasa instructor; Tirtha brings five years of teaching experience in Hatha and Ashtanga. After breakfast, the main block of Ayurvedic treatments happens late morning — massages with medicated oils, steam therapies, and more specialized procedures like Shirodhara, where warm oil is poured steadily over your forehead to quiet the nervous system.

The therapy list is extensive and all real Ayurvedic practice: Abhyanga full-body massage, Pinda Sweda with warm herbal boluses, Vashpa Swedanam herbal steam, Nasya nasal cleansing, and Panchakarma detoxification for those who qualify. There are also targeted treatments for specific joints — Kati Vasti for lower back, Greeva Vasti for the neck, Janu Vasti for the knees. The doctor decides what you need, so no two stays look exactly alike.

Evenings are deliberately unstructured. There are self-practice sessions in the late afternoon, and the teaching naturally covers yoga philosophy, Ayurveda, and meditation through conversation and daily practice. The setting helps — the property sits in the lap of Nagarjun Jungle, far enough from central Kathmandu's bustle that guests consistently mention how peaceful it feels. A caveat worth noting from past guests: Kathmandu's air can be noticeably polluted, and this is a developing country, so comfort levels are different from Western standards. But if you come with that in mind, the care and quiet win people over.
