Home › Retreats › 3-Day Balinese Yoga & Meditation Reset in a Rice-Farming Village, Bali
Indonesia · 3 days · From USD 160
The rhythm is simple and repeats across the three days: morning yoga and meditation, a cultural activity, Balinese meals, another cultural activity, then a late-afternoon session as the heat drops. The yoga is Watukaru, a Balinese tradition named for the mountain the region sits beneath, and the sessions fold in pranayama (breathwork) and chakra-opening work alongside the asana. Both beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome — nobody's expected to already know the style.
What sets this apart from a standard Bali yoga week is how much of it happens outside the shala. Cultural sessions aren't tacked-on extras; they're half the day. You could spend a morning out in the rice paddies, make coconut oil from scratch, cook a Balinese meal, sit in on a music or language class, learn ceremonial dance, or go through a waterfall purification ritual. Which ones you get depends on the day of the week you arrive, so no two stays are identical.
The teachers carry the retreat. Krisna has more than a decade of teaching behind him. Dewi came to yoga as a former rice farmer from this village and teaches with a directness that comes from having lived the change herself — she's not a visiting instructor flown in for the season. The whole operation is run by local people, and the money stays in the community.
Location-wise you're near Mount Batukaru, about forty-five minutes from Tabanan town and an hour from Tanah Lot Temple, so the famous sights are reachable but you're not sleeping in the middle of them. The included excursions take you to a local waterfall and to a nearby beach for an outdoor afternoon yoga session. Between sessions there are daily village walks and short treks, so you see the actual countryside rather than just the inside of a resort.
Accommodation is in homestays and private guesthouses spread across the village, all with air-conditioned rooms and shared garden, lounge and terrace space. Check-in is from 2 p.m., check-out by 1 p.m. Airport transfers from Ngurah Rai can be arranged for an extra fee. At three days it's short — a long weekend to slow down, eat well, move daily and get a feel for village Bali rather than a two-week overhaul.
