Balneario de Archena sits in a valley beside the Segura river, about 20 minutes from the city of Murcia. The complex has been running as a spa since the 19th century and the hotels still carry that history — the Termas Hotel has neo-Nazari corridors, interior patios and a dome with a Roman memorial plate from the end of the first century. The thermal gallery, where the balneotherapy treatments happen, is reached directly from the Levante and León hotels.

A stay runs on a simple rhythm. You have a medical consultation, which sets the tone for the diet plan you follow in the dining room. Each day includes a session in the thermal steam room. On top of that you get a fixed number of Archena massages and pressotherapy sessions — one of each on the three-night plan, two of each on the five-night plan — and a set number of days' access to the Balnea Thermal circuit. The spa thermal pools are open to you free for the whole stay.

The three-star Hotel León was restored in 1991 and keeps the feel of the early 20th century — winding corridors, odd corners, and lemon groves and the river promenade visible from some rooms. The Termas Hotel is the grandest of the three and the main building of the complex.

Murcia itself is warm and dry, with long summers. The resort works as a place to slow down for a few days rather than a base for sightseeing, though the city and the surrounding orchards are close by.
