Rishikesh · 28 days · From USD 919
Gurukul Yogashala is a traditional yoga school tucked into the forested hills above Rishikesh, away from the busier parts of town. This 300-hour course is the next step after a 200-hour training, and it's built for people who want to deepen what they already know, not start from zero. The teaching is heavy on the traditional side — you'll study the Yoga Sutras, yoga psychology, Ayurveda, and the philosophy behind the practice, not just how to sequence a class.
The daily schedule is full and demanding, starting at 6am with Mysore-style Ashtanga, followed by pranayama and kriya sessions, then a mix of anatomy, alignment, and philosophy lectures through the morning. Afternoons bring vinyasa flow, meditation, and yoga nidra, and evenings finish with dinner and lights out by 10pm. There are also workshops on Ayurveda, sound healing, and Indian arts like mehendi and rangoli, plus group sessions like acro yoga and Bollywood dance.
The teachers at Gurukul Yogashala are the real deal — they've spent decades practicing and teaching, and several grew up in the Himalayas. Guys like Keshav Ji, who studied with masters in the forests, and Yogi Arvind Negi, who lives by the Yamas and Niyamas, bring an authenticity you won't find in a studio back home. The small group size (12-15 people) means you get personal attention and real adjustments, which is huge when you're learning how to teach.
One of the best parts is the setting. The ashram is surrounded by forest on three sides, with mountain views and the Ganges nearby. You're living simply — basic rooms, sattvic meals, a daily routine — which is exactly what you need to focus on your practice. The course ends with a fire ceremony and certification, and you'll leave with a network of fellow teachers and a much deeper understanding of what yoga actually is.
