Home › Retreats › 4-Day Himalayan Sound Healing Training in Kathmandu, Nepal
Kathmandu · 4 days · From USD 359
The training is run by the Institute of Natural Medicine, which describes itself as the only nationally and internationally affiliated massage academy in Nepal. That matters for the style of teaching — this is a professional training with a syllabus, not a weekend taster. The four days move from foundational theory (what sound does to the nervous system, how to hold a session, instrument care) into practical facilitation, where you'll be playing bowls for each other and giving and receiving feedback. You'll work with traditional metal singing bowls, which are the core Himalayan instrument here, plus crystal singing bowls and an introduction to the gong. The curriculum is built around authentic Himalayan methods but is taught in a gentle, nervous-system-aware way, so it's suitable for beginners who've never held a bowl before.
The setting is one of the more unusual things about this course. The teaching studio sits within the Thamel district, which is the busy backpacker heart of Kathmandu — narrow streets, trekking shops, coffee places. But the studio itself is forest-style and quiet, so you get a calm working environment without being isolated from the city. You can walk out at lunch and be among the markets and stupas, then come back and sit down at a bowl. Classes are small and the pace is focused rather than rushed; you're not cramming instruments in one day and moving on.
Over the four days you'll build up from theory to practice. Expect a mix of demonstration, supervised practice, partner work, and discussion. You'll learn how to strike and rim-play metal bowls, how crystal bowls differ, how to use the gong sparingly rather than as a gimmick, and how to sequence a session so it actually relaxes people rather than startling them. There's also attention to the practical side: setting up a space, how long a session should run, how to talk to clients before and after, and how to keep instruments in good condition.
By the final day you should be leading a short practice session yourself, with feedback from the facilitator. The group is kept small and the facilitator team is confirmed before your stay, so you can ask who's guiding it before you commit. If you already teach yoga, massage, or meditation, this slots in as a new offering you can sell. If you're brand new, it gives you a proper Level 1 grounding rather than a vague introduction.
Accommodation is booked separately from the training and comes in three room options at the Institute: a standard twin room for two people, a private room for one person, or a single room with a shared bathroom. That means this course suits both people travelling alone and pairs or friends booking together. Meals are tailored to the group and dietary needs are confirmed before you arrive — you tell them what you need and they'll confirm what's available. Cancellation terms are set by the retreat leader and confirmed before any payment is taken, and you book directly with the leader rather than through a middleman.
