Home › Retreats › 5-Day Cederberg Wilderness Reboot & Wellness Adventure in South Africa
South Africa · 5 days · From USD 1264
Day one is a travel day. You're picked up from your accommodation in Cape Town and driven north into the Cederberg, a range of sandstone mountains known for its caves, rock formations, and ancient San rock art. After settling into the glamping camp, there's an orientation and an opening ceremony with a fireside intention circle before dinner. From then on, the days follow a similar shape – morning practice, adventure, good food, early nights.
The headline hike is the overnight trip to the Wolfberg Arch. You drive to the trailhead, walk through the Wolfberg Cracks – a series of narrow passages through the rock – and camp near the arch itself. You're up before dawn for a meditation under the arch as the sun comes up, then it's an eight-kilometre walk back down to the hidden mountain pools, where you can swim and jump off rocks. A support vehicle carries some of the gear, so you're not fully self-sufficient for the whole trip.
What makes this different from a standard hiking holiday is the mix. There's a dedicated yoga teacher, Lu, who trained in Hatha yoga at the Sivananda Ashram in India and also teaches Wim Hof breathwork – the ice bath on the final morning is part of that. There's a massage therapist, Sonica, who has been practicing since 2002 and offers treatments during the retreat. Guest speakers are brought in – indigenous Khoisan elders talk about the land, and there are astronomer-led stargazing sessions. The retreat is small, usually around ten to twelve people, so you get to know everyone quickly.
Food is plant-based, prepared by a chef with a fine-dining background who has worked in high-end kitchens from Africa to Central America. Meals are served three times a day, plus snacks, and everything is made fresh on site. The retreat runs from spring through summer – roughly mid-August to May – to avoid the colder, wetter winter months. It's a moderately active week; you don't need to be super fit, but a reasonable level of fitness will help, especially for the longer hike.
