Home › Retreats › 5-Day COREbreathwork Intensive: Rewire Your Nervous System Through Hiking in Mexico's Copper Canyon
Mexico · 5 days · From USD 1122
The days follow a set progression designed to systematically work through the body. Day one is about settling in and becoming aware of physical sensation, the second day focuses on releasing muscular tension, and the third pushes you physically on a demanding mountain hike. Day four works on feeling safe with others in a group setting, and the final day is about integrating everything you've experienced. Each day combines long hikes through the canyon with COREbreathwork sessions, where you lie down and breathe continuously for over an hour while the facilitator guides you and helps you release what comes up.
What makes this different from other breathwork retreats is the certification framework and the level of physical intensity. This is the first of three seven-day intensives that make up a 120-hour instructor certification, but you can attend this one simply for your own personal work. The curriculum draws on Polyvagal Theory, Gestalt psychotherapy, and the character analysis work of Wilhelm Reich, which is where the idea of 'muscular armor' comes from. The hiking is deliberately exhausting to activate the flight-fight response, and the breathwork is meant to complete that cycle so trapped energy can discharge.
Liz, the lead facilitator, is a therapist who understands trauma from both a professional and personal perspective. She spent over two decades dealing with PTSD, nervous anorexia, and the effects of medication, eventually recovering through somatic methods she now teaches. The local team is integral: Maruca, a Rarámuri woman, oversees the kitchen with traditional knowledge, and Tomás leads the hikes, sharing his deep connection to the canyon lands. The food follows the traditional Milpa diet, centered on corn, beans, squash, and chili, with 80% of it grown on-site.
The location itself is a key part of the experience. Urique is a small town in the bottom of the Barrancas del Cobre, accessible only by winding mountain roads. The sanctuary where you stay is a rustic cabin and hostel complex. The remote setting encourages disconnection from daily life and helps you focus on the internal work. The weather in November is described as ideal for hiking—mild and sunny during the day, but very cold at night, so be prepared.
