Home › Retreats › 5-Day Intuitive Painting & Yoga Retreat in the Joshua Tree Desert
United States · 5 days · From USD 1225
This retreat centers on Intuition Painting®, a six-phase creative process developed by Montine Blank over 25 years of facilitation. It's the opposite of a formal art class. There's no instruction in technique, no pressure to produce a masterpiece, and no artistic talent required. Instead, you're guided to quiet the inner critic and let color, shape, and impulse lead the way. Many participants describe it as dreaming onto the canvas — images emerge that you didn't consciously plan, and they often turn out to be reflections of what's going on inside you.
The days have a relaxed but purposeful rhythm. Yoga is optional each morning, and the painting sessions are where the heart of the work happens. There are also hikes into Joshua Tree National Park, walks through Coyote Canyon to see ancient petroglyphs, nature mandala building, a fire ceremony, and time for authentic movement — a practice where you let your body move however it wants, without a script. The balance of structured creative work and unstructured desert time is what makes the week feel both safe and expansive.
The ranch itself is a mid-century property set on five acres, with rooms that have been individually decorated with original art. It's a quiet, private setting where you can wander among the boulders, sit by the pool, or just watch the light change on the rocks. The group stays small — between 4 and 12 guests — which keeps everything intimate and personal. Montine is your primary guide throughout, with Laura Bogner leading the yoga sessions and Elka providing the on-site meals. It's a team that clearly knows how to hold space for people, whether this is your first retreat or your fiftieth.
