Rishikesh · 5 days · From USD 221
Agni Yoga's retreat is built around a simple daily arc. Mornings start with a pranayama session followed by a Hatha yoga class, which together ease you into the day before breakfast. Afternoons are given over to Ashtanga Vinyasa, a more dynamic practice, followed by a guided meditation. Evenings wind down with a Yin yoga class, dinner at 7pm, and lights out at 10pm so you actually sleep well. Between the morning and afternoon sessions there's time for the excursions and activities that the team has arranged, which is where this retreat separates itself from a straightforward yoga schedule.
On the mat, the teaching is split between several instructors who each bring something different. Lavish, born in Rishikesh with six years of teaching behind him, handles pranayama and yoga philosophy. Lakhiram, who studied at the Himalayan Yoga Institute in Haridwar, leads the meditation, mantra and kirtan sessions. Ashish Painuly trained at the Divine Life Society and Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama and holds degrees in Yoga Science; Nishant Tyagi, a 500-hour Yoga Alliance certified teacher, rounds out the team with experience in Ashtanga, Hatha, Yin and Restorative yoga. Between them, the classes cover more ground than most retreats this size.
The retreat extras are what guests tend to remember. There's an aerial yoga class, where you practice suspended in fabric—a playful change of pace. Sound healing sessions use singing bowls and other instruments to shift the energy after a few days of practice. A hike leads to a nearby waterfall, and there's a trip out to witness the Ganga Aarti, the evening fire ceremony on the Ganges. The schedule also includes mantra chanting and, on at least one morning, a Himalayan sunrise. None of it is obligatory, but most guests join in.
Accommodation is simple and clean, with attached bathrooms in every room, hot water and round-the-clock Wi-Fi. The property has a garden, a yoga shala, and a lobby with mountain views. While rooms are modest, the common spaces and the surrounding Tapovan area—close enough to the local market and the river for easy access, far enough to stay peaceful—are where you'll spend your free time. The retreat is capped at twelve people, which keeps classes intimate and makes it easy to get to know the other guests.
