Home › Retreats › 6 Day Yoga, Hiking & Sailing Wellness Retreat in Madeira, Portugal
Portugal · 6 days · From USD 870
This retreat is built around the idea of connecting with the elements—earth, water, air, and the natural world around you. The base is La Maison ZiaZen, a traditional Madeiran house with a four-sided roof and cherub statues that, according to local tradition, ward off evil spirits. Guests stay in simple, comfortable rooms and share meals prepared by Cilene, who also offers optional massages. Antoine, a professional nature guide since 2000, leads hikes that range from gentle walks along levadas (irrigation channels) to more challenging cliffside trails.
A typical day might begin with a yoga session in the dedicated shala, followed by a hike through farmland, forests, or along dramatic coastal cliffs. The hikes are not just exercise—Antoine points out local plants, explains the island's volcanic history, and leads meditative walking practices, including Afghan walking with rhythmic breathing. Afternoons often include another yoga class, and one day features aerial yoga, where you use a hammock to move through poses suspended above the ground.
The highlight for many is the sailing trip on day five, where you set out on the Atlantic for about three hours, with a chance to swim and spot whales or dolphins. The retreat also includes a visit to the city of Funchal. With all meals included and a focus on wellness, this retreat suits anyone wanting to slow down, be active outdoors, and practice yoga in a stunning setting. Just be aware that the entire experience is in French.
