7-Day Ayurvedic Wellness and Detox Retreat in the Karnataka Countryside

India · 7 days · From USD 690

This is a full immersion into traditional Ayurvedic medicine, not a resort-style holiday. When you arrive, Dr. Neel or one of the other Ayurveda doctors sits down with you for a thorough initial consultation, taking your pulse, reviewing your medical history, and checking your dosha balance. From that, you get a personalized treatment plan, along with herbal medicines to take internally—usually bitter fermented decoctions that are a vital part of the therapy. The treatments themselves happen twice daily, each session lasting a good 90 minutes total. Expect things like synchronized oil massages, Shirodhara (oil dripping on the forehead), and various other classical therapies, all given by therapists who have trained in or come from traditional Ayurvedic families in Kerala. The herbs and oils used are largely gathered from the ashram's own medicinal forest or bought from small family-run pharmacies in Kerala—some of the plants even grow right on the property.

Yoga and meditation are woven in daily. Group classes are kept small, normally five to ten people. There are two sessions most days: a two-hour practice in the morning for people with experience, and a slower evening session suited to beginners and seniors. You pick one or the other. The Ayurvedic doctor may tell you to skip yoga on certain days during intensive therapies that need complete rest. The point is to support healing, not to exhaust you. Guests who want extra help can book one-on-one coaching with a yoga teacher, which is already folded into the package.

Everything at the ashram supports the treatment. All meals are vegetarian, cooked in an Indian style with mild spices, and mostly grown on-site or bought from local farmers. Food is served at set times—brunch around nine, a light afternoon fruit, dinner at seven—and during detox, meals may be just rice gruel or plain boiled vegetables. The schedule itself is slow: no hustle, no tours except the occasional nature walk through nearby farmland, and silence from 10 pm to 10 am so you truly hear the morning birds. The setting is genuinely rural Karnataka, far from any city noise, with fields stretching for miles and the river rushing below the property.

The staff is what makes this retreat special. Guests often write about feeling like family by the end of their stay. There's Dr. Amrita, known for treating patients as gently as a younger sibling, therapists like Beena and Akhila who pamper you the whole way through, and yoga teachers like Sanjay, who comes from a long line of yogis and brings ten years of international teaching to his classes. It's not a luxury spa, but a real ashram where the focus is on healing. If you're looking to understand Ayurveda from the ground up and experience a genuine treatment program rather than a surface-level massage, this is the place.
