8-Day Adventure Retreat: Rafting in Greece & Hiking in Bulgaria

Day one starts in Sofia with a city tour of the main sights — Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the ancient Serdica complex — before a transfer south to Govedartsi village, tucked into the foot of Rila Mountain. The next morning you're up to Musala peak via a chairlift and a steady hike, with a picnic lunch on the way and views over the whole Rila range from the summit. Day three swaps boots for an electric mountain bike for a selected trek through the national park, paced for a mixed group. Day four takes you to the Seven Rila Lakes cirque for a five-hour hike around the chain of glacial lakes, staying overnight in a mountain hotel at 2,081 metres.

From there the trip crosses into Greece. Two nights are spent at a campsite in Ioannina, a lakeside town with a well-preserved old quarter. The rafting days are the centrepiece of the Greek leg: first the Vikos River Canyon (class 2+, known for its sheer beauty and overhanging plane trees), then the Araktos River Canyon (class 3+, with a longer stretch of rapids and a waterfall stop halfway). A qualified instructor leads both descents and all the rafting kit — helmet, wetsuit, life jacket, neoprene boots — is provided.
