Vietnam · 8 days · From USD 853
This 8-day adventure starts in Hanoi, where you have free time to explore the capital's old quarter and its food scene before heading into the countryside. On day two, you'll drive to Pu Luong Nature Reserve and start with a 10km trek to Kho Muong, an isolated village, following off-road trails through streams and mountains to reach the area's largest cave. The day ends in Bang village, where you can see traditional stilt houses surrounded by rice terraces. The next day involves a 2.5km walk crossing a suspension bridge to find giant water wheels, then a bamboo rafting trip upstream with locals on Chieu Lau Dam, followed by a 2km trek through rice fields. You'll return to Hanoi for the night before heading to Sapa the following morning.
Sapa is the base for the cycling section of the trip. Over two days, you'll ride through the Muong Hoa and Ban Ho valleys, passing villages of Black Hmong, Giay, Red Dao, Tay, and Xa Pho minorities. The cycling is mostly downhill on the first day, with lunch in a traditional Tay house and an overnight stay in a local village home. The second day's ride is easier, and you'll have a chance to stop at a local school and swim in a river near Ban Ho. Between rides, you'll take a walking tour around Sapa that includes stops at Silver Waterfall and Tram Ton Pass, the highest mountain pass in Vietnam, with views of Fansipan, Indochina's highest peak.
What makes this trip stand out is its focus on active travel and direct encounters with rural life. You're not just passing through; you're staying in villages, sharing meals with local families, and using bikes and your own two feet to cover ground that most tourists skip. The operator, Gray Line Vietnam, has been running tours for over 20 years and uses local guides who know the terrain and the communities. The trip is a mix of private tours (Sapa) and small-group tours (Pu Luong), so group sizes are kept manageable. While the itinerary is packed with activities, there are also moments of downtime to relax, swim, or simply soak in the mountain scenery. It's best suited to those with a reasonable level of fitness and a love for the outdoors.
