Rishikesh · 8 days · From USD 301
Rishikesh has been pulling in yoga students and spiritual seekers for decades, but this retreat earns its name by adding proper sightseeing onto the daily practice. You're not at an ashram with a rigid timetable; you're at a small retreat center in Tapovan, the neighborhood just uphill from Laxman Jhula bridge, where a lot of the town's yoga scene happens. The two hosts, Subhash and Vivek, are both local to Rishikesh, and they've built the schedule around showing you the side of the place they grew up in — the ghats, the caves, the market stalls, and the spots where the river is at its loudest.
Your daily yoga practice splits between Hatha Yoga in the mornings and Ashtanga Vinyasa in the evenings, with pranayama and shatkarma (the cleansing practices) worked in. Subhash teaches the Ashtanga classes and has a careful style, breaking down the breath-movement link for beginners, which makes the evening sessions more approachable than they sound. Between practices, days fill with things like white water rafting, a waterfall hike with a small climb, and visits to places like the ancient Vashist Cave and the Ganga Aarti ceremony at dusk.
What makes it different from a plain yoga retreat is that you actually go out and see things. Many guests are on their first trip to India, and this works as a gentle, well-run introduction — you get the guided bits (rafting, the aarti, the sunrise viewpoint) plus pointers for the solo wandering. The program day five onwards keeps the same shape—morning yoga, breakfast, sightseeing or free time, evening practice, dinner — so you know where you stand, but it's flexible enough that if you'd rather skip rafting and read by the river all day, nobody minds.
Accommodation is simple and clean, in the retreat's guesthouse-style building. Rooms are either shared twin rooms or private rooms with bathrooms, all with beds made up and towels on arrival. The food is entirely vegetarian, cooked fresh for each meal, and they're patient with allergies and dietary wishes — a guest who has been here told me the kitchen went out of its way to accommodate her. Reviews of the retreat are consistently good on the food and the teaching, and most people seem to leave having actually relaxed, which is the point.
