Adult Surf Camp in Lanzarote: 7 Nights on Famara Beach with 20-Hour Surf Course

Canary Islands · 7 days · From EUR 520

Calima Surf sits on Avenida el Marinero in Caleta de Famara, on Lanzarote's northwest coast, right at the edge of the Famara Nature Reserve. The surf house is 100 metres from the beach, which is the main reason people come — you walk out the door and you're on the sand. The school has been running since 1996 and follows the British Surfing Association programme, which is an intensive 20-hour-a-week course rather than the two-hours-a-day format many other schools use.

The beginner course covers the fundamentals: beach safety, paddling, catching white water, standing up and riding. Lessons run 10:00-12:00 with theory and practice, then 12:30-14:30 is free surfing with an instructor watching. Once a week there's a session of Functional Surfing Balance using the Drysurf Balance system, and there's photo analysis to highlight the common mistakes beginners make. You finish with a Level 1 certificate covering 20 hours.

The intermediate course is for people who have already done a beginners course, either here or elsewhere. It runs the same schedule — two hours of classes in the morning, two hours of supervised free surfing in the afternoon — but adds Drysurf and Gyroboards sessions, personalised photo analysis and error correction. Each monitor takes a maximum of eight students.

Both packages include accommodation in the surf house, with a private room with one or two beds for one or two people. Common areas are cleaned daily, and sheets, blankets and bath towels are provided. The whole place has free WiFi.

What sets this apart from a lot of surf schools is the evening programme. On Tuesdays and Fridays from 17:30 to 19:00 you go to the school's private gym — exclusive to clients — for functional exercises designed to improve your surfing, followed by the photo analysis. The school also has a strong safety focus: all instructors are qualified (B.S.A. or Canarian/Spanish Federation) and there are lifeguards, plus public liability insurance.

If you don't have a full week, there are shorter packages from 3 nights, and an intensive option with 4 hours of lessons per day. There's also a Free Rider camp that includes accommodation and full equipment but no lessons, for surfers who just want to go out on their own.
