Albania Kitesurf Camp: 7 Days of Lagoon Sessions on the Adriatic

Albania · 7 days · From EUR 670

A typical camp day starts around 8 or 9 in the morning with the forecast check. Fation and Ersi look at the wind, decide between Durrës, Spille, Hidrovor or Tale, and message the group the evening before or first thing so everyone knows where to meet. You drive together or follow in your own car, rig up on arrival, and get on the water. Beginner sessions happen on the lagoon side of Sektor Rinia, where the water sits at about a metre deep across a huge riding area. You learn the kite's safety systems first, then wind direction and kite power, then steering, then body dragging downwind without the board. Semi-private lessons max out at two students per instructor, so there is always someone watching your kite and someone to grab you if you drift.

Lessons run in blocks. The beginner package is three hours semi-private. Progression is twelve hours over three days, for people who have already flown a kite and want to get onto the board: kite control in the water, board handling, body dragging, the water start, with coaching adapted as you go. The advanced package is five days with twelve hours of coaching plus eight hours of semi-independent riding, covering water starts, first rides, riding downwind, board control while riding, and upwind technique. Private one-on-one lessons are 70 € an hour if you want the instructor entirely to yourself. Extra hours can be added any time at 35 € per hour semi-private.

Midweek the camp usually works in a downwinder. The beginner version runs two to three hours in groups of three or four riders per guide — easy riding along lagoons and empty beaches, with rescue support and transport included. The advanced downwinder is three to four hours across huge lagoons with mirror-smooth water, working on control, technique and efficiency. There are also rest hours in the middle of the day when the heat is at its worst, and evenings in the apartment or out for local food. If the wind dies completely in Durrës, which is rare in summer, the coast is long enough that it is almost never off everywhere at once, so the group moves.

What sets this apart from a generic kite school is the ratio and the water. Two students per instructor, every time. A lagoon you can stand up in for the first hours, which is why independent riding inside 6 to 12 hours is the norm here rather than the exception. And a second spot a few hundred metres along the same beach that opens to the Adriatic, where the water chops up and small waves come in, so you are not stuck in the shallows once you can ride. Instructors switch between Durrës and Vlorë depending on the forecast, and in autumn, winter and spring they also use Durrës Central near the Red Wheel when the wind direction suits it.

Fation Konçi has 16 years of experience on this coast and teaches in clear English; reviews repeatedly mention how calm and patient he is, and how he adapts to different skill levels while giving honest advice about conditions. He is also the person who keeps an eye on the whole beach, helps with launches and landings, and pushes to keep Rinia clean and safe. Ersi Lilaj teaches alongside him and is described by guests as patient, fun, and good at building confidence on the water. Together they run the Albanian Kitesurf Championship and the local community around the spot — the same people who will cheer your first ride.

Durrës itself is Albania's main coastal city, about 40 minutes from Tirana, and the kite beach at Sektor Rinia sits just outside it. Wind in the main season is thermal: it builds through the day with the heat, which makes summer the most predictable time to book. The practical range is 12 to 30 knots, with beginners starting in 12 to 18 and advanced riders throwing tricks above 20. Thermal wind frequently blows harder than the forecast shows. Daytime temperatures through summer are hot, the water is warm enough to ride without a wetsuit for most of the season, and the sunsets over the Adriatic are a running theme in the guest reviews.
