Algarve Yoga and Surf Wellness Escape

Algarve Yoga and Surf Wellness Escape

Portugal · 8 days · From EUR 890

The programme runs Sunday to Sunday, with six surf sessions and six yoga classes across the week. Surf lessons are two hours, generally 9:30am to 11:30am, and are taught by ISA-certified local instructors who have been coaching on this stretch of coast for at least five years. Groups are split by ability after the first day, so complete beginners stay in the whitewash near the shore while more experienced surfers head to the outside break. Boards and wetsuits are provided and are included in the price — you don't need to bring or hire anything.

Yoga is Hatha and Vinyasa, taught in a converted studio space at the guesthouse or on the terrace when the weather allows. Classes run 75 minutes, 5:30pm to 6:45pm, and are pitched at mixed levels with options given for both newer and more experienced students. The teacher is a British instructor who has lived in the Algarve for eight years. Wednesday afternoon is left completely free — no surf, no yoga — which most guests use for a trip to Sagres or Ponta da Piedade.

What separates this from the larger surf camps along the same coast is the size and the location. It's capped at 14, and the house sits in a quiet residential street in Lagos's old town, a five-minute walk from the marina and ten from Praia da Batata. You're not in a purpose-built resort on the edge of town; you're in a town, with restaurants, a market and a bakery on the corner.

Breakfast and lunch are made at the house each day by the retreat's cook. Breakfast is a spread of fruit, yogurt, eggs, bread and coffee from 8am. Lunch is either packed for the beach or served at the house around 1pm — usually salads, grains, grilled fish or a vegetarian option. Dinners aren't included, which is deliberate: Lagos has a lot of small restaurants within walking distance, and guests generally go out in groups of four or five.

Evenings are unstructured after yoga. Some people walk to the seafront, some go for a drink in the old town, a few just read on the roof terrace. There's no enforced schedule after 6:45pm, and the house is quiet by around 11pm most nights.
