Alpine Wave Pool Surf Retreat: Coaching and Accommodation at Alaïa Bay, Switzerland

Alaïa Bay is a dedicated surf venue in Sion, in the Swiss Alps, built entirely around a wave-generating pool. The wave is adjustable, which is the point: beginners get a soft, forgiving reform, and advanced surfers get a faster, steeper section including an 'Expert Turn to Barrel' wave type introduced in 2026. The Wavepool Surf Tour has held competition events here, so the wave holds up to serious riding.

A stay here is built around your session schedule rather than a scripted itinerary. You pick your level, book lessons or session packs, and the day is organised around when you're in the water. The surf school runs lessons with instructors who coach you in the water and out of it, including video review so you can see what your takeoff and turns actually look like rather than guessing. Accommodation is on site, in the venue's own hostel, a short walk from the pool. That means no driving between your bed and your session — you walk over, surf, come back, eat, rest, and go again. For a place where you might surf two or three times a day, that's the whole reason to stay here rather than in a hotel in town.

The setting is genuinely odd and worth the trip on its own: you're surfing with alpine mountains around you, in a valley in Switzerland, not on a coast. Non-surfing hours can be spent in Sion and the surrounding Rhône valley, which has vineyards, hiking and mountain terrain. It's a hybrid trip — part surf training, part alpine stay.

What separates this from a normal surf camp is the wave itself. Ocean surf is inconsistent; a session can be great or a washout. Here you get the same wave repeatedly, which is far better for fixing a specific problem — your pop-up, your bottom turn, your positioning — in a single weekend than a week of chasing swell. Surfers who've plateaued often get more out of a few days here than a fortnight at a beach break.
