Alpine Yoga & Hiking Retreat at the cōmodo hotel, Bad Gastein

Alpine Yoga & Hiking Retreat at the cōmodo hotel, Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein · 4 days

The daily rhythm on a retreat week here is roughly: yoga before breakfast, a proper breakfast in the retreat group's own dining room, then out on the mountain. Hikes run from a couple of hours on the lower trails near town up to full days on the high plateau above Bad Gastein. The hotel's location means you can walk straight from the door into the trail network — no shuttle needed for most routes. Afternoons are for the spa, the indoor pool, a massage, or the thermal baths in town. Evening yoga or a sound session happens on some days, but not every day.

What separates this from a generic alpine yoga week is the setup at the hotel. There's a dedicated yoga room used only for retreat groups and hotel classes, a separate dining room with its own kitchen so retreat groups eat together rather than in the main restaurant, and a spa that's small enough that it never feels like a queue. The hotel also runs two regular yoga classes a week for guests outside retreat dates, so the room is in constant use and the teachers are local, not flown in for one week.

The themed weeks vary. Alongside the yoga-and-hiking programme there are specific retreats on the calendar: a 'Mindset & Longevity' four-day block in September 2026 focused on mental and physical health and regeneration; a 'Time for Change' yoga retreat in September 2026 for people stuck in a rut; a 'Yoga mit Anais' week at the end of October 2026 where Anais Telian teaches yoga set to RnB music; a yoga week with the Stretching Panda from 2–7 November 2026 with daily sessions for all levels; and an eight-day 'In Harmony' yoga and sound bowl retreat in December 2026. There's also a YogaFall festival from 16–26 October 2026 with yoga classes, aqua yoga and a film night on 25 October.

The cōmodo also hosts non-yoga retreats — a knitting retreat in September and an autumn quilting retreat in late October 2026. If you're booking a yoga week, check the dates, because the hotel programmes different things on different weekends.

Bad Gastein is roughly 1.5 hours by car or train from Salzburg. The town is known for its waterfall running through the centre and the Felsentherme thermal spa. The trails above town go up to the Stubnerkogel and the Graukogel, with a mix of easy valley walks and steeper half-day routes. The altitude means summer mornings are cool, which makes the hiking genuinely pleasant rather than a slog.
