Hotel Nesslerhof is in Großarl, a village in the Salzburger Land region of Austria, about an hour south of Salzburg. The hotel is a wellness property with a 3,000 m² spa, and the yoga retreats are built around that spa as much as the yoga itself. A typical retreat day starts with a morning yoga class — often vinyasa or hatha depending on the instructor — followed by breakfast. Mid-morning might be a mindfulness session, a walk, or a workshop tied to the retreat theme (herbs, detox, inner balance). Afternoons are open for spa time, treatments, or exploring the valley. There's usually a second, gentler yoga session in the late afternoon or early evening, then dinner.
The instructors change with each retreat. Sarah Bacher leads the Spring Detox Retreat in April, focusing on cleansing practices and gentle yoga. Nicole runs the Inner Balance Yoga Retreat in May, which is women-only and combines yoga with breathing and meditation. Theresa and Lisa co-lead the Yoga & Herbs Retreat in June, where you'll work with alpine plants and herbs alongside daily yoga flows. Julia leads the Pop Up Yoga Retreat in November, a mixed-level retreat with an emphasis on wellness and rest as the season turns colder.
What sets these retreats apart from a standard yoga holiday is the spa. The 3,000 m² area includes indoor and outdoor pools, several saunas (including a Finnish sauna and a steam bath), an infrared cabin, and a natural swimming pond. There's also an 800 m² garden for lounging between sessions. The spa is not an add-on; it's the other half of the retreat. You'll likely spend as much time in the sauna and pools as you do on the mat.
The hotel itself is family-run and has a reputation for good food — much of it sourced from the region. Rooms are alpine-style, with wood, natural fabrics, and balconies facing the mountains. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried. This isn't a silent retreat or a boot camp; it's a comfortable hotel where yoga is woven into the day.
Großarl itself is a small, traditional village with a few shops and cafés. In summer, there are hiking trails straight from the hotel door — easy valley walks or more serious climbs up to alpine huts. In winter, it's ski country, though the yoga retreats run mostly in spring, early summer, and late autumn. The nearest airport is Salzburg (about 1 hour 15 minutes by car); the hotel can arrange transfers.
