Andean Wellness Trek: Sacred Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Andean Wellness Trek: Sacred Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Peru · 4 days · From USD 776

This trek is run by Wari Tours, an indigenous-led agency based in the Sacred Valley, with guides who were born and raised in native highland communities. Your lead guide, Alfredo Huari, born in the community of Chillipahua, brings a personal connection to the landscape and its traditions. He studied tourism in Cusco and worked for other agencies before branching out, his goal to offer the kind of immersive, respectful contact with indigenous culture that standard tours often miss. He speaks fluent English and is trained in first aid and mountain rescue.

The trip is different in its approach. It's a private trek—your group only—which means the pace is set to suit you. There's no rushing to keep a large party together. Time is built in for sitting with a view, for a quiet moment at a ruin, and for the small ceremonies that give the walk its meaning. On Day 2, after the effort of reaching Dead Woman's Pass, you take part in a gratitude ritual honoring the mountains. On the trail, you'll visit sites like Runkurakay, a circular watchtower, and the terraces of Wiñay Wayna, each explained by Alfredo in the context of Inca history and belief.

Campsite life is comfortable and well-organized. The kitchen team sets up each afternoon and prepares multi-course meals using fresh, organic produce—much of it from the family's farm in Urubamba where the trip starts with breakfast. Expect soups, main dishes, desserts, and afternoon snacks, all served with boiled and filtered water. The porters carry gear and provisions, so you walk with just a daypack. The sense is of being looked after thoroughly while being very much out in the wild. Accommodation is in tents for three nights, but the service level feels closer to a glamping operation, with attention to detail that reviews consistently highlight.

Reviews from previous trekkers repeatedly mention the quality of the food, the hard work of the team, and the guide's knowledge and warmth. The trek operates year-round through Cusco or the Sacred Valley, and includes permits and entrance tickets. The total distance covered is roughly 45 kilometers over four days, crossing a high pass and descending into cloud forest. It's a physically demanding few days, but the support and the payoff—arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate at sunrise—make it feel achievable for fit and determined walkers.
