Home › Retreats › Arctic Island Yoga & Adventure Escape in Northern Norway
Norway · 6 days · From USD 4000
The retreat runs for 5 nights on Manshausen Island. You arrive via Bodø: fly into Bodø Airport (BOO), get to Bodø Sentrumsterminalen båt by 17:30, take the 18:00 express boat to Nordskot (1.5 hours), and Manshausen staff meet you at the dock and run you across to the island by private boat. The island itself is small and entirely off-grid in feel — the architecture is the award-winning futuristic kind, glass-walled cabins set on rock, and the whole place is owned by polar explorer Børge Ousland.
Each day includes optional yoga, either led by an InRetreat guide or a local Norwegian instructor, depending on how you book. Mornings are the more active sessions and evenings are slower and more restorative. The two big organised outings are a 4-hour guided kayak trip through the fjord, with drysuits, kayaks, warm drinks and lunch included, and a 2–3 hour guided hike and cave exploration to Resshola Cave starting from Oksholmen on the northern edge of Nordskot. Both are guided and suitable for people without prior experience.
Food is a serious part of the week. Breakfast is a buffet — fruit, yogurt, muesli, cheeses, cured meats, smoked salmon, eggs, breads, jams and preserves. Lunch is a single light course, usually pasta or rice with salad. Dinner is a three-course meal from the Manshausen chef, and almost everything is seasonal, local and organic. There's a hot tub on the island you can rent separately, and unlimited use of the Nordic sauna is included.
What separates this from a standard Norwegian cabin trip is the combination of the location and the setup: you're on a private island with a small group, there's a yoga teacher with you if you want one, and the kayaking and hiking are built into the schedule rather than being extras you have to figure out yourself. You can also book it self-guided, in which case the logistics run the same way but without a teacher travelling with the group.
The island works in every season, but the experience changes. October and February–March give you both Northern Lights and enough daylight to do the kayaking and hiking comfortably. Midwinter has very short days, and summer has no real darkness at all — worth knowing before you pick dates.
