Argentina Surf Coliving & Coworking on the Chapadmalal Coast

Mornings at Bai Bai tend to split two ways. Some of the crew walk across the beach to catch a few waves at Luna Roja before breakfast; others roll out a mat for a few sun salutations on the deck, or just take a slow breakfast before opening the laptop. The surf out front is a reliable left-hander, and the surrounding coastline adds the Paradise point break with long hollow rights and the Las Cuevas area, which mixes a left reef, a shallow right and beach break peaks. If you want big clean waves, the Argentinian winter is the time to come.

Work happens wherever you like. There's a living room set up for it, garden spots surrounded by plants and birds, and a cafe in front of the house that most people end up defaulting to — it has ocean views, AC or heating depending on the season, and a solid menu. WiFi is fast and there are laptop-friendly workspaces throughout. Lunches are available from the onsite restaurant, breakfast is included, and the communal kitchen is open if you'd rather cook.

After work hours the place fills up. Surf lessons and coaching run at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, with board rental available on site. Yoga and meditation sessions happen on the deck. There's a skate ramp at the top of the garden, a slackline, Nitro surfskates and bikes to borrow, and a fire pit among the trees where people end up with guitars out. The movie projector and screen get used on slower nights.

What separates this from a standard surf hostel is that you're living in a working community rather than passing through. Javier runs the house, and the atmosphere leans on art, cooking, open fires, music, skateboarding, literature, permaculture and games as much as it does on the surf. The house also organises surf trips to other locations around the world, and Chapadmalal is where that started.

The town itself is quiet — scenic cliff beaches, people sipping yerba mate at sunset, a rustic and unpolished surf scene. It's south of Mar del Plata, so you get access to a real city about 30 minutes away without staying in one.
