China · 15 days · From USD 1534
The Wudang Shihe Kungfu & Wellness Retreat is a 15-day deep dive into traditional Chinese martial arts and Taoist philosophy, based at the foot of the sacred Wudang Mountain in Hubei province. The academy sits right next to Yuzhen Palace, an ancient Taoist temple, and is surrounded by the quiet, forested slopes that have drawn hermits and martial artists for centuries. This isn't a sanitized wellness package—it's a chance to live, even briefly, the way a Wudang disciple would, with training woven into every part of the day.
The daily schedule is built around core practices: Tai Chi (the slow, flowing forms), Qigong (energy cultivation), and meditation (including standing meditation, which builds both stillness and leg strength). You'll also learn traditional breathing exercises, and depending on the day and your level, you may get an introduction to Kungfu forms. The instructors, led by Master Zheng, a 15th-generation lineage holder of the Wudang Sanfeng style, and Master Zi Xiu, a 16th-generation lineage holder and champion, emphasize correct technique and understanding over spectacle. They adapt every drill to your ability, so if you've never done any of this, you won't feel lost.
Beyond the physical practice, the retreat is a cultural immersion. There are Taoist calligraphy sessions, visits to ancient temples, and hikes through the mountain landscape. You'll learn about the principles of Taoism—simplicity, balance, harmony with nature—and see how they apply to movement and daily life. The food is vegetarian, organic and prepared with local mountain ingredients, designed to support your training without leaving you sluggish.
What makes this retreat particularly special is its authenticity. Many places teach tai chi, but few can do so in the actual birthplace of the art, with teachers who carry the lineage. The small group size (2-15 people) creates a personalized, almost family-like atmosphere—you'll often be training alongside the same people for the full two weeks. The setting itself is powerful: peace, fresh air, and the constant reminder of centuries of dedicated practice. By the end, you'll not only have improved your health and learned new skills, but you'll have a sense of what it means to live with greater intention.
