Kerala · 9 days · From USD 356
The retreat unfolds at a 100-year-old heritage villa in Veliyanadu, a village in the heart of Kerala's 'Rice Bowl.' The property has traditional wooden architecture, clay-tiled roofs, and wide verandahs overlooking the backwater canals. It's a working, lived-in place, not a polished resort, which is exactly its charm. You'll be surrounded by coconut groves and paddy fields, and the only traffic is the occasional canoe.
A typical day starts with morning yoga, led by Dr. Anusha Achu Kurian, an Ayurvedic clinician and certified yoga therapy trainer. Her classes are practical and accessible, focusing on breath, alignment, and movement that suits your body that day. After breakfast, the day is yours. You can join a guided nature hike, borrow a kayak for a paddle through the canals, or arrange a visit to a local village.
The retreat's standout feature is its Ayurvedic focus. Through an online consultation before you arrive, you'll have your prakriti (constitution) and dosha assessed, and treatments are then tailored to you. These are booked as add-ons, but are highly recommended — guests consistently say the personalized massages and therapies are what set this retreat apart. Evening Smriti meditation, guided by Dr. Anusha, offers a rare, introspective practice designed to cultivate clarity and focus.
Food is a highlight. Meals are not included in the package but can be ordered from a menu of Kerala specialties — think dosa and puttu for breakfast, vegetable or fish curry meals for lunch, and porotta or appam for dinner. Everything is made with fresh, organic local ingredients, and many meals are served on a banana leaf. The retreat can cater to most dietary needs, from vegan to gluten-free.
Beyond the villa, the location is a gateway to Vembanad Lake and the Kuttanad wetlands. A 15-minute speedboat ride takes you to the lake, or you can drift on a traditional houseboat through canals lined with paddy fields. You'll experience authentic village life, from watching toddy tappers climb palms to seeing farmers work the fields that sit below sea level.
