Balinese Hindu Culture & Watukaru Yoga Week in Sesandan

Balinese Hindu Culture & Watukaru Yoga Week in Sesandan

Indonesia · 7 days · From EUR 440

A typical day starts with a morning yoga and meditation session, followed by breakfast. Late morning brings the first cultural activity — one day you might be out in the paddies learning how rice is planted and harvested, another day you're learning the basic movements of a Balinese dance or trying a gamelan instrument. Lunch is back at the retreat centre. The afternoon holds a second yoga session plus pranayama or chakra-opening practice, then the second cultural activity: making coconut oil, cooking a Balinese dish with the kitchen team, or a walk to a local waterfall for a melukat purification ritual. Dinner is in the evening, and most nights wind down early because mornings start early too.

Twice a week, weather permitting, one of the sessions moves to the beach. There's also a weekly village cleanup that guests can join — it's optional, but most people do it, and it's the clearest example of how this retreat positions itself: as a guest in a community rather than a customer at a resort. The retreat centre and the accommodation are separate, connected by a short shuttle or a ten-minute walk through rice farmland.

Krisna leads most of the yoga, meditation and pranayama sessions, with ten years of teaching Watukaru yoga behind him. Dewi manages the retreat and also teaches. Her background is unusual: she spent years working in the rice fields while raising six children, found yoga along the way, and now teaches both international guests and members of her own village. That dual role is why the cultural side of this week feels less like an organised excursion and more like being shown around by people who actually live there.

The village of Sesandan is quiet and agricultural, well away from Bali's main tourist corridors, though Tabanan city and Tanah Lot Temple are within easy reach if you want a half-day out. Accommodation is split across homestays and guesthouses in the village, all air-conditioned, with garden, lounge and terrace spaces. Meals are cooked on site by the local team, three times a day. Transfers from the airport take about two hours and cost extra.

This is a beginner-level retreat — the yoga is gentle and no prior experience is expected. It suits solo travellers and couples who want a slower, more grounded Bali than the beach-club version, and who are genuinely interested in the Hindu culture of the island rather than treating it as scenery. If you want a resort with a spa menu and a cocktail bar, this isn't that. If you want to spend a week in a village, learning from people who grew up there, it is.
