New Leaf sits on three acres of flat coconut grove and tropical garden right in the middle of Maenam beach, a swimmable 6km stretch of sand on Koh Samui's north coast. The resort moved into these purpose-built grounds in 2019. The main building holds the gym, clinic, yoga deck and the Loft rooms, and the bungalows are spread around the gardens.
A typical day starts early with a morning walk along the beach, followed by yoga or stretching. On a juice-fasting programme, meals are replaced with juices at set times. On a nutrition programme, you get plant-based meals. Each guest has a daily slot in the detox building for a colema or colon hydrotherapy session. Afternoons are for the gym, aqua sports in the pool, a sauna or herbal steam, or just lying by the water. Thai boxing, bike rides and mountain hikes are on the schedule too, including a 10km hike up to a temple.
What sets it apart from a typical wellness hotel is how single-minded it is. There's one programme, built around weight loss, detox, fitness and health, rather than a spa menu bolted onto a holiday resort. There are no outside diners wandering through. The detox building alone is a 300 sqm facility with two full-time staff, ten private rooms, large showers and two separate toilets per room.
The facilities are better than you'd expect at this price point. The gym is 130 sqm, fully air-conditioned, with a 5-metre ceiling and views over the pool to the beach. It has a boxing area, yoga and stretching space and a rack area. Upstairs at the back of the main building, the yoga deck looks across the resort to the mountains. Men and women have separate spas, each with a far infrared sauna, herbal steam room, showers and changing areas.
The programme is run by a team of around 35 staff, including trainers, detox staff and medical staff, and the programmes are medically supervised. Between them they speak English, Thai, German, Hindi, French and Mandarin, which helps given guests come from more than 30 countries. Part of the programme is learning how to eat better and build a manageable exercise habit, with the aim that results hold up once you're home.
The north coast of Samui is the quieter side of the island, with less nightlife than Chaweng or Lamai. The beach in front of the resort is good for swimming, and the hills behind Maenam are where the hikes go.
