Beginner Kitesurfing & Wing Foil Week on Brazil's Windiest Coast

Brazil · 8 days · From USD 1294

Jericoacoara sits at the end of a sandy track, cut off from main roads by dunes and accessible mainly by 4x4. That isolation keeps the town small and the beaches uncrowded. The kiting lagoon is a short walk from most accommodation: knee-deep water, no current, no waves, no boat traffic — just sand, wind, and space to make mistakes without consequence.

Lessons start on land, learning how the kite moves and how to steer it without worrying about water. Once that clicks, you move into the shallows for body dragging (being pulled through the water while learning edge control) and eventually onto a board. Instructors use radio helmets, so you hear corrections and encouragement in real time rather than waiting until you swim back to shore. Sessions run around two to three hours, split across morning and afternoon depending on when the wind is best.

If you want to try wing foiling instead of — or alongside — kitesurfing, that's an option. Wing foiling uses a handheld inflatable wing and a board with a hydrofoil underneath; it feels quieter and more gliding than kiting, and some beginners find the learning curve a little gentler. The instructors teach both and can switch focus midweek if you want to experiment.

Outside lessons, the town is walkable and slow-paced. Sunset draws a crowd to a big dune overlooking the water; there are a handful of restaurants serving grilled fish, açaí bowls, and coconut water straight from the shell. Some evenings the group heads out to swim in natural pools or visit a nearby river. The vibe is casual — flip-flops, hammocks, early nights if you're tired from the water.

Ventus, the operator, is run by Carol, who has kited across Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, Zanzibar, and Madagascar. She started the company to share those spots with beginners and intermediate riders who want more than a standard lesson package. A portion of each booking goes to local community projects — education support and small-business grants — and guests sometimes meet the families involved.
