Home › Retreats › Buddhist Philosophy & Yoga Wellness Retreat in Rural Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka · 10 days · From USD 789
The retreat is built around daily yoga and meditation practice, Buddhist philosophy sessions, and the option to add Ayurvedic treatments. Mornings start early with a 90-minute yoga class led by Bernardo, a Brazilian teacher who's been practising for over eight years and works exclusively with this property. His style is rooted in traditional Hatha but draws on alignment, vinyasa, kundalini and restorative techniques.
Meditation sessions happen twice daily — once in the afternoon and once after evening yoga. The owner, Ishara, leads some of these herself. She's been practising and studying Buddhism for eight years and focuses on understanding how the mind works rather than abstract philosophy.
The Buddhist philosophy component includes a formal talk, a temple visit, and a conversation with a monk. These aren't hour-long lectures — they're woven into the week alongside the physical practice and the slower rhythm of plantation life.
If you want Ayurvedic treatments, the resident doctor (Dr. Galappaththi, trained at the University of Colombo) will do an initial consultation and design a treatment plan. Treatments like massage, oil baths and steam baths cost extra, but the consultation itself is included. The doctor also gives evening talks on Ayurveda and how to incorporate its principles into daily life.
Outside of scheduled sessions, you're free to explore the property and village. Staff can take you rubber tapping (in season), vegetable picking in the organic garden, or on walks through the paddy fields. There are weekly cooking classes, and if you want to see how the local community operates, you can join in temple activities or school support projects the villa funds.
The property has won awards — Best Spa Hotel in Sri Lanka (2015 & 2016) from the World Luxury Hotel Awards, and Best Wellness Retreat in Sri Lanka from the World Spa Awards — though the vibe is more village guesthouse than luxury spa. Over 90% of the staff are local villagers, and the place runs on a profit-share model with them.
