Bulgarian Mountain Bootcamp: Fitness, Hiking & Yoga Retreat at the Foot of the Rila Range

Bulgaria · 7 days · From EUR 460

Mark and Franky started running these retreats in 2017 after years of skiing in the Bulgarian mountains. What they noticed was how good this corner of the Balkans is for walking — the Rila range sits right there, the air is clean, and the local food is grown and made nearby. That's the setting for the whole week: training sessions in the morning, activities through the day, and hikes that take you out into terrain people travel to Bulgaria specifically to walk.

The bootcamp week is deliberately balanced rather than punishing. You get structured training with qualified personal trainers, but the schedule also leaves room for relaxation and the mountain walks, so it isn't six days of back-to-back circuit training. Franky leads many of the sessions and has a reputation for reading the room — if your knee, shoulder or back is playing up, she adjusts the movement instead of telling you to sit it out. Exercises are tweaked for each person's level, from absolute beginners to people who train hard at home.

There are two other formats on the same property. The yoga week runs three sessions per day led by two yoga instructors, so you get variety in teaching style and a lot of mat time across the week. The hiking break is lighter on structured fitness: optional hatha yoga each day, building towards one big full-day hike in the mountains as the centrepiece of the trip. All three share the same accommodation, food and setting.

Food is handled by the team's chefs, and reviewers single them out alongside the trainers and the views. Meals are built around local produce from the region, and the team cooks for the group rather than sending you out to restaurants. If you have dietary requirements, it's worth flagging them at booking.

What separates this from a standard fitness holiday is the combination of genuinely qualified trainers, a mountain range on the doorstep, and pricing that sits well below most Western European equivalents — from £499 for a week that includes accommodation, meals and daily programming. It's a small operation run by the people who actually lead the sessions, not a franchise with rotating staff. If you want a week that's part training camp, part walking holiday, and you'd rather not pay Alpine prices for it, this is aimed squarely at you. If you need a big spa resort with multiple pools and a cocktail bar, it isn't that.
