California Surf Camp for Adults: Guided Surf Trips in San Clemente

United States · 6 days · From EUR 1000

Surfers often describe California as one big movie set, and this camp leans into it. You're based in San Clemente, a small Orange County town halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. The setup is straightforward: a clean room at West Coast Surf & Stay, breakfast before you head out, and two guided surf sessions a day from Monday through Friday. Your guides drive, pick the spots, and read the conditions — you just show up and paddle.

The surfing is genuinely varied. Within a 15 to 45 minute drive there are reef breaks, beach breaks and point breaks, and the guides match the day's swell to the group's level rather than sending everyone to the same spot. Beginners get whitewash and gentle reforms; intermediates work on reading green waves, timing turns and duck diving; advanced surfers head to Lower Trestles, The Wedge and Blacks. Because a lot of the guiding is flexible, you might surf two spots in a day.

What separates this from a big surf hotel is the guiding. The crew live locally, surf these breaks year-round, and take guests to secret spots that aren't on the usual camp rotation. It's also a camp for adults, so there's no fixed age bracket — solo travellers, couples and friends all end up in the same van, which is part of why so many reviews mention the people as much as the waves.

The accommodation is a five-minute drive from the beach, with restaurants and local surf shops nearby. Rooms are private or shared, clean and well maintained, and the neighbourhood is relaxed and safe. Breakfast is included daily; other meals are up to you, and there's no shortage of options nearby. Airport pickup from the local airports is part of the package, and the camp can arrange extra hotel nights at West Coast Surf & Stay if you want to arrive early or stay on.

The optional Point Break Day is exactly what it sounds like: a morning surf, an afternoon skydive, and a sunset BBQ. If you'd rather keep it to waves, you can skip it — but it's the kind of thing that ends up being the story you tell when you get home. The season runs from March through the autumn, with Week 1 of 2026 starting March 1.
