Canary Islands Surf & Yoga Week: Fuerteventura, Tenerife & Gran Canaria

Canary Islands Surf & Yoga Week: Fuerteventura, Tenerife & Gran Canaria

Canary Islands · 7 days · From EUR 550

Mornings start with breakfast at the accommodation — muesli, yoghurt, fresh fruit, bread, cheese and ham, coffee and tea — before the group loads up and heads to the day's surf spot. Surf courses run in small groups and are split into a bigger practical part on the water and a shorter theory session, taught in English or Spanish. On the Fuerteventura North Shore week you also get five dinners, a barbecue, a trek up the Calderón Hondo volcano which sits within walking distance of the lodge, and three yoga classes. The yoga is there because balance, endurance and strength all carry straight over into your surfing.

Where you sleep depends on which island you book. On Fuerteventura South you can pick between apartments, bungalows, studios or rooms in the surf hostel, all near the beach and with sea views — the apartments, bungalows and studios have their own kitchen with fridge and stovetop if you'd rather cook. The North Shore camp in Lajares is a modern house with its own pool and a typical Canarian garden, in the middle of the hip surf town. The Tenerife camp is in a residential building owned by pro surfer Alex Zirke, with single, double or bunk rooms, and there's also an apartment option with its own pool overlooking the sea.

The surf school sits right next to the accommodation on Fuerteventura, so there's no commute to deal with before your lesson. Instructors are highly trained and take you to spots matched to your level — Majanicho works for both beginners and advanced surfers, Playa de Esquinzo is one for the more experienced, and Los Lobos can produce rides of up to 500 metres on a good day. On Tenerife, spots like Almáciga and El Socorro suit beginners and advanced surfers alike, while Benijos is reef and advanced-only. Gran Canaria's La Cicer on Playa de las Canteras works at any tide and is good for both levels.

Beyond surfing, there's plenty to fill the rest of your time. On Fuerteventura you can add windsurfing, snorkelling, SUP or deep sea fishing; the island's volcanic landscape is also good for running, cycling and wandering through old towns and fishing villages like Morro Jable. On Tenerife you can hike the Anaga mountains, visit Teide National Park, swim with sea turtles in the bay of El Puertito, or skate the island's new skate park with its quarter pipe, ledges and bowl. Gran Canaria has Puerto de Mogán — nicknamed the island's Venice — plus Sunday flea markets near Parque Santa Catalina.

The camp runs 365 days a year. Advanced surfers get the most consistent conditions between October and March, while the summer months of July, August and September bring humidity that makes it feel properly tropical. Water is actually warmest in winter, reaching up to 24°C in December. A 3/2 mm wetsuit is enough all year, and between August and October you can get away with board shorts or a shorty. On the reef breaks, booties are worth wearing to protect against sharp volcanic rock and sea urchins.

This is a surf-first trip with yoga and hiking layered in rather than a wellness retreat with a bit of surfing attached. You'll be in the water most days, eating well, sleeping near the beach and spending the rest of your time exploring volcanic islands that sit just 100 km off the coast of Africa.
