Canggu Surf Yoga Camp: Learn to Surf on Bali's Best Breaks

Indonesia · 7 days · From USD 62

Most people book three to seven nights, though there's no minimum stay. You can book just lessons if you've already got accommodation, or the full Surf & Stay package which bundles a bed, breakfast and a daily semi-private lesson. The camp sits on Jl. Kayu Tulang in Canggu, about a 15-minute walk from the beach, or you can rent one of their scooters for a fairly cheap daily rate.

Each surf day follows roughly the same shape. The crew leaves the house around 8am (they'll pick you up from local accommodation if you're not staying on-site). Before paddling out, there's a short theory session on the beach covering the day's spot, the waves, and what to watch for. Then it's into the water. Coaches stay with you, tell you which waves to go for, and give you pointers between sets. Some days the group splits by level — beginners on the inside reform waves, intermediates out the back — and some days they drive further down the coast toward Seminyak or over to the west coast at Balian or Sumbul if the swell is better there.

After the session, you head back to camp for breakfast (included in the Surf & Stay package) and video review. Watching yourself surf is humbling and effective. Coaches pull up the footage, pause it, and point out where your stance broke down, where you should have been further forward on the board, why you fell on that one. You also get to keep the videos. On some afternoons there's a drop-in surf theory class covering wave direction, tides, and the different breaks around Bali — worth going to even if you've surfed a bit before.

Instructors are mostly local Balinese guys who've grown up surfing these breaks. Indra is one of the owners and a Canggu local who's been teaching for over a decade. Surya, Irfan, Sunny and Moks are all mentioned repeatedly in reviews as patient, clear explainers, and good at calming nervous beginners. They switch you onto different boards as you progress — most people start on a soft-top and move to a hard board within a few days if they're picking it up. They also adjust which spot you surf based on your ability and the day's conditions, so you're not stuck at the same beginner break all week.

The camp has a real social side without being a party hostel. People eat dinner together most nights, there are occasional BBQs, and solo travellers tend to fall in with the group quickly. If you want to just surf and be left alone, that's fine too.
