Home › Retreats › Cherating Surf Camp: 3-Hour Daily Coaching on Malaysia's Beginner-Friendly Waves
Malaysia · 7 days
A typical day starts early while the wind is still offshore. You meet your instructor at the beach, grab a board from the school's rack, and spend the first 20 minutes on the sand going over paddling position, pop-up timing and how to read what the water is doing. Then it's into the water for the rest of the three-hour block. When the tide and swell suit a second session, you go back out in the late afternoon — many people find the second session is where things click.
Groups are kept small, and one-on-one coaching is available if you'd rather have the instructor to yourself. Lessons cover paddling, popping up, balance, catching waves and riding them, plus the parts nobody mentions until you're out there: tides, currents, and how to tell a set wave from a closeout. Beginners spend most of the first couple of days in the whitewash; intermediate surfers work on turning, generating speed and picking better lines.
The school has more ISA-certified instructors than any other operation in Cherating, and they're the only ones on the beach with a shower, bathroom and seating on site. That means you're not walking back to your room wet and covered in sand between sessions. Boards and safety gear are provided, matched to your level and the day's conditions.
Where this differs from a bigger surf resort is that Cherating is a real town with a real local surf scene, not a purpose-built complex. Locals have been surfing here since the 1970s and learned from visiting surfers from around the world. You'll be surfing alongside that community, eating at the same places they do, and getting a sense of how Malaysian surfing actually works.
Accommodation is a five-minute walk from the sand, with ocean views from the property. You're close enough to check the waves from your room before deciding whether to grab a board. The east coast monsoon shapes the season, so the camp runs when the swell is consistent — this is a November-onward operation rather than a year-round one.
