Spend Christmas and New Year by the Atlantic at Omassim guesthouse in Palhais-Ribamar, just outside Ericeira. This festive retreat runs from 22 December to 2 January, so you arrive before Christmas and stay through to the New Year, sharing the holidays with a small group in a family home rather than a resort.

There are two ways to join. The Yoga Escape follows the guesthouse's daily rhythm: a morning Vinyasa Flow class and an evening Yin or gentle flow class, with the rest of the day free for the saltwater pool, the coastal cliffs, the gym or a massage. The Yoga & Surf Escape adds surf lessons with Ericeira Waves Surf School, the retreat's partner school, in small groups of no more than five students per teacher, with wetsuits, boards and insurance provided.

The retreat is hosted by Lia, a long-time yoga teacher and bodyworker, and Eduardo, who runs the kitchen. Meals are gourmet vegetarian and vegan buffets made from seasonal, locally sourced produce, and dietary needs can be catered for with notice.

The guesthouse takes a maximum of 21 guests. It has a garden with hammocks, a saltwater pool, a sauna and ice bath, and a cosy living room with a fireplace for winter evenings. Ericeira, a World Surf Reserve, is close by, and Sintra, Mafra and Lisbon are easy day trips.
