Cold Hawaii Surf Camp: Stay & Surf on Denmark's Wild West Coast

Klitmøller sits on the Thy coast in northwest Jutland, about an hour's drive from Aalborg. It has been a surf town since the 1980s and now draws riders from Germany, Norway and the rest of Denmark year-round because the wind and swell are reliable — almost always something to ride. The water is cold. That's the trade: you wear a wetsuit, you get empty lineups and a rugged coastline that feels more like Scotland than the Mediterranean.

The setup at Viking Surf House is straightforward. You stay in rooms in the centre of Klitmøller, a short walk from the beach and the shop. Lessons run most days, usually a morning session and an afternoon session depending on the tide and wind. The instructors — Peter, Erik and the rest of the team — pick the spot each day, load boards into the van and drive you there. Beginners start on foam boards in the whitewater; intermediates get video feedback and work on bottom turns, cutbacks and reading the sets. There's also SUP if the surf is flat or you just want a different kind of paddle.

Equipment is included and kept clean — wetsuits are rinsed and dried daily, and there's a full quiver of boards from soft-tops to performance shortboards, plus sizes for kids. You don't need to bring anything except a towel and a willingness to get cold water up your nose.

What makes this different from a generic surf camp is that it's a proper local operation. Peter and Erik have been surfing this coast for years and know which beach works in which wind — they'll drive 20 minutes down the coast if that's where the waves are. They also hand out tips on where to eat, what to see and where to paddle when the surf's blown out.
