Home › Retreats › Creative Wellness Retreat: Fire & Clay Ceramics Immersion on Rhodes Island
Europe · 10 days · From USD 2555
This ten-day ceramic retreat represents a rare opportunity for intermediate and advanced ceramicists to push beyond their comfort zones and explore the ancient alchemy of fire-based surface transformation. Unlike conventional pottery workshops, this experience focuses specifically on experimental firing techniques that produce unique, unrepeatable results—surfaces shaped by timing, temperature, and material interaction that cannot be exactly replicated.
Over eight full working days, you'll immerse yourself in pit firing (including building your own kiln), raku, obvara, and saggar firing techniques. You'll work with terra sigillata and learn to prepare surfaces through traditional burnishing methods. The materials you'll explore—copper, iron oxides, ferric chloride, and organic combustibles—react unpredictably with fire and smoke, creating surfaces that tell the story of their creation.
The retreat philosophy embraces experimentation, failure, and pushing further. Your instructor Gudrun brings together Greek passion and Dutch practicality, having completed professional training at the Dutch Ceramics School and advanced wheel-throwing studies. Her teaching style is detailed yet supportive, creating a calm, creative atmosphere where you feel confident to take risks.
The stunning location in Koskinou adds another dimension to your creative journey. Working in a garden studio beside the pool, surrounded by bougainvillea-draped walls and the warm Mediterranean light, you'll find inspiration in the timeless rhythm of island life. The retreat includes accommodations in beautifully appointed rooms, three daily vegetarian meals with local wine, organized excursions, and the freedom to use the studio independently outside scheduled sessions.
You'll leave with not just finished pieces—including one professionally packed for shipping—but with a deeper understanding of process and a transformed approach to your work. The surfaces you create here cannot be repeated, and neither can this experience.
