Home › Retreats › Cycling and Outdoor Fitness Week on a Historic Galician Estate, Spain
Spain · 7 days · From EUR 1200
The estate sits in a small village in inland Galicia, north-west Spain, surrounded by vineyards, oak woods and rolling farmland. It is a working country property with a main house, outbuildings, a walled garden, a swimming pool and a tennis court, and it has been in the same family since the 16th century. Guests sleep on site in the main house and its converted outbuildings, which means you can roll out of bed, have breakfast, and be on the bike within half an hour.
A typical day starts early: coffee and fruit at 07:30, then a guided ride leaving around 08:30. Routes are planned by the on-site cycling guide and range from 40km flat spins along river valleys to harder 80-100km days with 1,200m of climbing into the surrounding sierras. The roads are genuinely quiet — you will see more tractors than cars — and the surfaces are good. On weather days there is a training room with bikes, weights and functional kit, plus a covered terrace, so sessions move indoors rather than getting cancelled.
Afternoons are deliberately unstructured. There are guided walks to local viewpoints, a Romanesque church and several castros (Celtic hill forts) within an hour of the village. The property has a swimming pool and tennis court that guests can use whenever they like, and there are thermal springs and a handful of historic towns within a short drive if you want to spend an afternoon off the bike. Two or three afternoons a week there is an optional organised excursion — a winery visit, a walk on a section of the Camino, or a swim at a nearby river beach.
Evenings start with dinner around 20:30 in the main dining room. The kitchen uses produce from the estate garden and from producers in the surrounding villages — Galician staples like empanada, lacón con grelos, pulpo, and fresh fish from the coast an hour away. The wine list is local, mostly Albariño and Mencía, and included with dinner.
The reason to come here rather than a purpose-built cycling hotel is the mix: you are training somewhere with real history and a working landscape, not a resort. Groups are small and the guide will reroute the day based on how the group is riding. If you want a hard week you can have one; if you would rather ride 40km, swim, and spend the afternoon reading under a vine, that is fine too. It suits people who like riding bikes somewhere new, being outdoors all day, and coming back to a real house with a real kitchen at the end of it.
