Denmark · 5 days · From EUR 500
The retreat runs on a simple framework the organisers have refined over 20 years: water, herbs, food and yoga. The water is what you drink, wash with and use for the salt-water cleansing practices. The herbs come in as teas, tinctures and juices — papaya leaf, peppermint, fennel seed, ginger, gentian root, cayenne, black walnut, burdock, sassafras, aloe vera and purshia bark all feature, along with wild greens like skvadderkål, dandelion, nettle, birch leaf and wild garlic. The yoga is the part that makes the rest of it work, moving everything through the body so the cleansing doesn't just sit there.
On a typical day you'll be up for yoga and meditation before breakfast. If it's a shankaprakshalana morning — Saturdays on weekend retreats, early in the week on longer courses — you drink six glasses of salt water in two-glass rounds with specific yoga positions in between, skip breakfast, and let your system do its work. On courses longer than four days, colon hydrotherapy is offered on the second day. You administer it yourself using equipment you're given, after thorough verbal and written instruction, and the kit is yours to take home. The price is 400 DKK and is optional. Nasal rinsing (neti) with lukewarm 0.9% saline is taught on every course, and you keep your own neti pot afterwards if you want to continue.
Food is vegetarian and built to support the cleansing rather than fight it. You'll drink green juices that taste bitter the first time and sweet by the third. Meals are light, plant-based and seasonal. If you drink a lot of coffee, they suggest tapering down before you arrive, but you're also welcome to bring your own Nescafé and have a cup — this isn't a regime that punishes you for small pleasures.
The sauna by Rytsebæk Strand is a daily fixture. It's a wood-fired heat-and-cold-water routine — hot sauna, then the sea or a cold rinse, repeated as long as you like. Many guests say this is the part they remember most. The rest of the day is filled with yoga, meditation, dance, singing and sound healing, all led by instructors who have been doing this since before wellness retreats were a trend.
What makes this one different is how little is packaged. There's no branded wellness aesthetic, no smoothie-bar soundtrack, no pressure. It's a practical, slightly old-school approach to cleansing and yoga, run by people who clearly believe in it and who let you decide how far you want to go. If you've done Vipassana or traditional yoga courses and want something in that spirit, this will feel familiar. If you've only done resort yoga, it'll feel like a different sport — in a good way.
