Home › Retreats › Desert Wellness Escape: Yoga, Cooking & Salt Lake Therapy in Egypt's Siwa Oasis
Egypt · 7 days · From USD 2456
The week starts in Cairo with a hotel night, a welcome dinner of Egyptian home cooking, and a quick evening walk to shake off the flight. Next morning you pile into a private minibus for the long drive west. The route crosses open desert with planned stops; by late afternoon you're in Siwa, where a gentle sunset yoga session and a soak in the natural hot springs ease the travel out of your body.
From Day 3 onward the schedule settles into a rhythm: morning yoga and pranayama, breakfast, an outing or cooking class, then evening yoga and dinner. The salt lakes are a highlight — the salinity is high enough that you float without effort, and the mineral content is said to help with joint pain and skin conditions. One review mentions being buried in salt inside a traditional salt cave for fifteen minutes, then waking the next morning with 'aches and pains gone.' Whether that's placebo or physics, it's an unusual experience.
Two hands-on cooking classes teach Siwan recipes using local produce — dates, olives, herbs from nearby farms. Meals lean traditional Egyptian: expect tagines, flatbreads, stews, and lots of fresh vegetables. Breakfast and dinner are included; lunch is on your own, usually bought cheaply in the village.
Day 5 brings a 4x4 safari into the Great Sand Sea, where you'll do yoga and meditation on the dunes at sunset and eat a Bedouin dinner under open sky. Day 6 winds down with a deep Yoga Nidra session inside a salt cave — the acoustics and mineral air make it hit differently than a studio session. A farewell dinner and a final hot-spring soak cap the retreat before the long drive back to Cairo on Day 7.
Marina leads all the yoga. She trained at a 200-hour RYT program in India and has been teaching in Siwa since 2017. Her style is Hatha-based, with a strong emphasis on breathwork (pranayama) and Yoga Nidra. She's fluent in the local rhythms and knows the oasis well enough to arrange visits that feel more like introductions from a friend than guided tours.
