Digital Detox and Silent Retreat in the Umbrian Hills

Eremito sits alone at the end of an unpaved road, surrounded by 3,000 hectares of protected woodland in the UNESCO Monte Peglia Biosphere Reserve. It is far from villages and light pollution, which is why the disconnection here is not a rule you have to endure but simply the shape of the place. The building holds 18 rooms and a shared table where dinner is eaten in silence.

The daily schedule is the same for everyone and everything in it is optional. Mornings begin with readings in the chapel at 7:30 and gentle yoga at 7:50, followed by breakfast at 8:30. From 10:30 you can walk in the woods or do nothing at all. Lunch is at 13:00. In the afternoon, the relaxation area with Turkish bath and jacuzzi is open from 16:00. At 18:00 there is meditation and readings in the chapel, then silent dinner at 19:30 with Gregorian chant. From 20:30, conversation by the fireplace for those who wish.

What sets Eremito apart from a hotel that simply offers a detox package is that the detox is the architecture itself. There are no screens of any kind in the rooms. Inside the hermitage there is no mobile signal; a dedicated outdoor area is available where your phone works with its own data connection, for what is truly necessary. Most guests do not touch their phone for the length of their stay.

The hermitage was created above all for people who travel alone. The most numerous Celluzze are designed and priced for one person, and arriving alone is the most natural way to arrive. Guests aged 16 and over are welcome. You do not need to practise yoga, or meditate, or believe in anything. Every activity is optional.

Eremito borrows the rhythms and aesthetics of monastic life — silence, simplicity, Gregorian chant at dinner — but it is a hotel, not a religious experience. Guests of every background are welcome. The minimum stay is two nights, the time it takes to settle into the rhythm of the hermitage. Three or four days is the length most guests choose.
