The resort is on Delavan Lake, and most of what you do happens within sight of the water. Rooms are in the main lodge and in outlying buildings around the property. Check-in is at the front desk, where staff will take your key handover as the moment to suggest leaving the phone behind. From there it is a short walk to the shore, the pool, the restaurants and the spa.

Days here are unstructured by design. A typical one might start with breakfast, then a tee time at Majestic Oaks, an 18-hole course that winds through oak trees with lake views on several holes. If golf isn't your thing there are tennis and pickleball courts, a game room stocked with Scrabble, Monopoly and chess, and quiet corners with Adirondack chairs facing the lake. The inner courtyard has a fire pit and is one of the better spots on the property to sit with a book.

Calladora Spa handles the slower end of the day. Massages run from Swedish to deep tissue, and there are facials plus a eucalyptus steam room. You can book a single treatment or build a full spa day around it. The spa is on site, so there is no driving involved.

Food is a bigger part of this than you might expect from a lakeside resort. 1878 on the Lake is the main restaurant, run by Executive Chef Ryne Harwick, and the menu is built around Wisconsin farms and producers. The wine list includes bottles from nearby vineyards and there are local craft beers. The outdoor deck overlooks the lake and is the place to eat when the weather cooperates. The resort also runs wine dinners with paired menus, and holiday meals such as Easter and Mother's Day brunch.

What separates this from a standard resort weekend is the framing. The property actively encourages guests to leave devices behind, and the facilities are set up so that you don't need them: everything from the golf course to the spa to the restaurants is walkable, and the entertainment on offer is deliberately analog. Delavan itself has a downtown with heritage sites and a calendar of local festivals if you want to leave the grounds.
