El Salvador · 8 days · From EUR 1620
The day starts on land, not in the water. You meet your coach for a 30-minute theory and warm-up session where you talk through the day's objectives, do some visualisation and focus work, and get a read on what the ocean is doing. Then it's into the water. Your coach analyses the conditions, picks the right break for the day, and travels there with you by car — the group's driver stays with the vehicle so your things are safe while you're out. During the session the coach positions you for the right waves and gives technique advice on the spot. One of the academy's filmmakers captures the whole thing.
After a break, you sit down with your coach for a 45-minute video analysis. This is where the camp earns its reputation — every wave gets reviewed in detail, and you walk away knowing exactly what worked and what didn't. The videos are emailed to you so you build a record of your progress across the week. Then come the drills, 45 minutes of them, usually in the lap pool, the gym, or on a skateboard in the concrete wave. The point is muscle memory — taking what you saw in the footage and burning it into your body before the next session.
Afternoons are yours, with one included activity each day. Yoga on Mondays, a mobility class on Tuesdays, an ice bath with breathwork on Wednesdays, a half-day tour of El Salvador on Thursdays, and a self-defence class on Fridays. Saturdays are free — the camp suggests a night out. The ice bath is only included on the full-week and two-week camps, so if that's a priority, book the longer option.
What separates this from a standard surf holiday is the level system and the small group size. Each group is capped at 4 participants, which is genuinely small for surf coaching — you're not one of twelve people paddling around hoping for a tip. You're assigned a board by your coach each day from the academy's quiver, though you're welcome to bring your own and ride it throughout. At the end of the week you'll have video footage of yourself surfing at the start and the end, which is a more useful souvenir than a t-shirt.
The academy is based at Puro Surf Hotel in El Salvador, and the breaks they use depend on the day's conditions — the coach makes that call each morning. The camp is designed so you can join without staying on site if you're already in the area, and non-participating guests can come along with a student. El Salvador's surf season runs year-round, and the camp runs every week of the year, Sunday to Sunday.
