Equine Embodied Writing Retreat for Women in the New Hampshire Woods

United States · 3 days · From USD 735

The retreat runs for three days on a private property in the New Hampshire woods, at 46 Peverly Road. It's built around two things: horses and writing. The equine sessions aren't lessons or riding — they're unstructured time in the field with the horses, which sounds like nothing until you do it. Horses react to how you're actually feeling, not how you're presenting, so people tend to drop the performance fairly quickly. That's the setup for the writing.

The writing sessions are intuitive and open. There's no workshop structure, no critique, no sharing unless you want to. You write by hand or on a laptop, inside or outside, and the prompts are there if you're stuck. The stated aim is to move past the inner critic, and after a morning with the horses that's usually easier than it sounds.

The property sits in a quiet stretch of northeastern woods. It's private, it's green, and it's the kind of place that asks you to slow down. You'll spend most of your time outdoors — with the horses, walking, or writing on a porch. The yurts are modern and well-appointed, so the immersion in nature doesn't come with a sacrifice in comfort.

Meals are handled by a private chef, all three a day, using fresh local ingredients. This is a real part of the retreat rather than an afterthought — the food is cooked for the group and eaten together. Dietary requirements can be discussed when you book.

The retreat is run by Driftwood Adventure Treks, a US-based operator, and the facilitator team for each date is confirmed before your stay. It's women only, and while there's a suggested minimum age of 0 on the listing (meaning no age limit), in practice this suits adults. Most people book solo.

What makes this different from a standard wellness weekend is the combination. There are plenty of writing retreats and plenty of horse retreats. There are very few that put the two together and leave both of them unstructured enough to actually work on someone who's creatively stuck.
