A typical day starts early, with a breathwork or meditation session close to camp while the light is still soft. After breakfast you pack up and drive to the next spot, which might be a remote beach, a stretch of desert or a lookout over the water. The afternoons mix free time on the beach with walks, swims and a longer guided session. Evenings are for dinner, the campfire and a quieter practice under the stars before bed.
The main thing that sets this apart from most breathwork retreats is that the setting changes every day. In five days you see both coasts of the peninsula. You start at Bahía Magdalena on the Pacific, where grey whales come to calve, and finish on the remote Sea of Cortez shoreline. ARRE Baja says it has access to more than 320 remote beaches and camping spots along over 1,300 miles of coastline, so you rarely share a campsite with anyone else.
Marcela Beltrán leads the practice side: conscious breathing, guided meditation and somatic work, which means body-based exercises that pay attention to physical sensation. Salvador Quiroz is the Baja explorer who knows the routes, the beaches and how to camp well in remote places. Between them, one runs the sessions and the other makes sure the trucks, camps and meals all happen on time.
ARRE Baja is an adventure and safari agency rather than a hotel, and you can see it in how the trip runs. Each vehicle carries 8 gallons of fresh water so you can rinse off the sand before sleeping. Each camp gets a private toilet tent. The mattresses are a real step up from ordinary camping gear, and the team brings homemade food plus wine and spirits. Past guests mention the high-end camping gear and the food more than anything else.
The timing is good too. The trip runs at the start of the Sea of Cortez mobula ray season. From April to July, tens of thousands of mobula rays gather along the coast, and the aggregations here are among the largest in the world. The breathwork programme doesn't promise a mobula encounter, but it's that time of year and that stretch of water.
Baja California Sur is a separate state from Baja California, about 1,000 km to the south, and the operator notes it is the second-safest state in Mexico. Most people will fly into the region and get picked up there. The team looks after you from landing until your flight out.
