Home › Retreats › Flexible Yoga Days by a Volcanic Crater Lake, Nicaragua
Nicaragua · 4 days · From USD 570
Laguna de Apoyo is one of those places that does a lot of the work for you. It's a flooded volcanic crater, the deepest lake in Nicaragua, held inside a nature reserve of dry tropical forest. The water stays warm and clear, and because it's a protected crater there's very little boat traffic — you can swim out from the dock or paddle a kayak across glassy water at first light. The retreat is set right on the shore, which means the yoga, the swimming and the resting all happen within a few steps of each other.
The daily rhythm is two guided yoga sessions, usually one in the morning and one later in the day, held in open-air spaces that make use of the forest and lake around them. The teaching leans toward mindful, gentle movement and breathwork rather than anything athletic, and the classes are mixed-level, so beginners aren't left behind and more experienced practitioners can go deeper in their own practice. Props and pace are adjusted to whoever turns up.
What makes this different from a packed wellness week is how much it leaves alone. There's no attempt to fill every hour. After a morning session you might have nothing on until the afternoon, and that gap is the feature, not a gap in the programme. The retreat is run by Miriam, a Nicaragua-based retreat leader, and the accommodation is at her property on the lake — rooms range from a shared twin up to a lake-view suite that sleeps three.
Free time tends to go one of two ways. Some guests stay close to the water: swimming, kayaking, reading, meditating on the dock. Others use the location as a base to see the region — Granada, the well-known colonial city, and the Masaya area with its markets and volcano are both an easy trip away. You can mix and match day to day; nothing is locked in.
Food is plant-based and made fresh daily from local produce, served communally. Dietary needs are handled if you flag them when you book. It's a small operation, so the group stays intimate and the whole thing feels more like staying at someone's lakeside home than checking into a programme.
